A look at a couple of photo's popping up from the soaks of Siam.
Starting south-ish.
Above Taryn hot springs (Ranong), a private soaking space located just around the corner of the public Phu Lim Phi hot springs.
More soaking in the south. Krabi's Wareerak and an idyllic set up from Plaipoo hot spring, Kapong, Phang Nga.

Mama
This is what my 100% unadulterated, pure Bliss looks like and it feels so good to be in it, in the now 🌄This is where I've spent some of my best moments of my life. A place I come back to as much as I can.Pai, #Thailand will forever be one of the most healing spaces on the planet for me.As I sink into the steamy water of this natural hot spring in my friends backyard, everything that isn't real gets stripped away, like old paint on beautiful raw wood.Nestled upon rice fields in a #Karen #hilltribe village, surrounded by mountains and a gorgeous sunset backdrop, this #hotspring is true paradise. It's so beautiful being able to bathe in nature, with the fire of Mama Earth heating and nourishing the water so it's blessed up with all these rich minerals that are healing my body on a cellular level.I feel so grateful to feel these moments during challenging times.Thank you Pai for your sweet nourishment 💗
From south to north. Above a picture from Pai (Mae Hong Son) with a story.
Below the little known hot spring of Nong Khrok (northern Chiang Mai, near Phrao) followed by Pong Kwao, near Samoeng.

While we finish with a hot spring which could be anywhere. But it's not. Once again Pai.

It’s up to you👁 Ik had verschillende gedachten om deze foto te beschrijven..

Salty

llcoolreed at Wareerak hot spring (Krabi)
🌸🌸
Not much to report on. Nor that many pictures, come to mention.
Mgronline (Mar. 20) has an article on a newly (?) discovered saline hot spring in the province of Krabi. Translated:
'Today (20 March) Mr. Maen Lamphol, Head of Village 7, Ban Na, Huai Nam Khao Subdistrict, Khlong Thom District, Krabi Province, brought villagers to explore the new salty hot spring in the area of Moo 7, Huay White water after the villagers have jointly developed the route Take a walk to see the nature in the area by the salty hot spring that is newly found as a circular pond. Diameter of about 2 meters, depth of about 50 cm. There are traces of villagers brought stones around. And bring the wood to be a walking path The water in the pond is clean, salty, with a temperature of 35 - 40 degrees. For health, relieving pain'.
It further reveals that tourists come here because of it's natural location, within a swap forest.

More Krabi. wanderintwo (Mar. 14) has an essential (?) guide on Krabi's Emerlad pool and Krabi hot springs. Not much to add. I mean what help is it to prepare yourself to be not alone at these locations? Sounds logical in one of Asia's best known hot springs.

Lemongrass

What my perfect day looks like (and what I did yesterday): wake up at 6am in a bungalow with my lover surrounded by nature. Head to my favorite coffee shop and sip on a latte while looking at the beautiful view. Go on a long ride (either dirt bikes or horses) through the mountains and swim in some hidden hot springs. Ride back to town and have lunch. Go back to the bungalow, take a nap, work on some business emails and make some art. Go back into town and have another delicious meal. Go on a hike and watch the sunset. Come back into town for some dessert. End the day with a couples massage and some lemongrass tea. One day this is going to be a average day for me. What does your perfect day look like? If money wasn't an issue and you could do ANYTHING, what would your dream day look like? Tell me all the details💌
A quick tour through Thailand's soaking pictures of the past cooler months, most though from north Thailand. Such as Mae Hong Son province hot spring at Pai (above).

The brokebackpacker actually has a recent entry (Jan. 12) on Pai and it's hot springs:
'One of the best things to do in Pai is visiting one of the many natural hot springs. The Sai Ngam hot springs (also known as the secret hot springs) are run by the local Karen hill tribe, who showed me where to find mud that’s rich in minerals.
We lathered our body in mud and waited for it to completely dry before washing it off. My skin was so soft and smooth afterwards, I couldn’t believe it. There are so many natural health benefits associated with hot springs thanks to the high levels of magnesium, sodium and sulphur thanks to the geological conditions.
There’s a bunch of different hot springs around Pai, but the best, most natural and the cheapest one is Sai Ngam. Entry is only 40 Bhat, compared to 300 Bhat at the super touristy Tha Pai Hot Springs plus the drive to Sai Ngam goes through the incredibly beautiful national park!'

Nearby and probably on your way to Pai. You have the opportunity to stop at Pong Duet which lies on the edge of Chiang Mai province.

These hot springs were amazing! Loved to chill out and have the whole national park just for ourselves! 😍 cheers to the low season 🥂....Prirodni dzakuzi je bio fenomenalan! Line.today has a Thai language article (Dec. 2) on the hot springs of Doi Saket (also Chiang Mai province) which have been recently renovated.

Meanwhile in south Thailand there's a bit of news to be hashed up.

Photo above is a lead photo to a Thai article (Nov. 9) on Trang's salty hot spring at Ban Khuan Sa - Tha Khlong Palian District. It basically describes how an investment has been made to improve the facilities.
Thairath has a same sort of article (Nov. 12).

Below it's Krabi-time. Wareerak to be precise.

In Bangkok the soakers seek alternatives. Tripcanvas gives as a recent overview of 11 Bangkok onsens:
'What’s even better is that luxury in Bangkok doesn’t necessarily mean burning your (or your guy’s) purse, especially when it comes to onsens and spa. Onsens may cost you a bomb elsewhere, but you’ll be surprised at what you can get in Bangkok!
Stay with us as we journey to find the most value-for-money and affordably luxurious onsens and spas in this bustling city!
All receive a positive glow. One comment though states:

'BTW .. I live in Bangkok and visited some of the SPA above described .. well the photos although looks nice with staged models, dont exactly reflex the state of the establishment. They are not all as clean as presented and some better be avoided'.

Let's just start somewhere in Central Thailand, Khanchanaburi naturally. A bit cheeky too.

Strawberries

Sometimes luxury does not mean a lot of money. It may seem like a 5-star hotel, but it is just an hot spring in the rural area of Thailand. Let me tell you the story of this picture:During the lunch break at Samoeng we met a Thai-UK couple, owners of a strawberry farm nearby. We have not only visited their farm, eaten their awesome strawberries, but we were also recommend this hot springs. They were not on our plan or route, but we decided to accept the challenge. We drove like 30 km passing by a lot of villages, real authentic Thai countryside, until reaching a dirty road. We had almost lost all our hopes of finding the hot springs when suddenly we saw the sign ⚠️ 150 baht per person and you get towel and swim clothes. A lot of different hot pools with different temperatures and depths in a lovely setting... the rest you can judge by the picture or pay them a visit 😉
After this description of how to get to the Samoeng hot spring, following is another Chiang Mai hot spring, that of Pong Duet:

Staying north there are two articles on the hot springs of Chiang Rai.

The first article from Chiang Rai News (Sep. 25) concerns hot spring promotion:
'Chiang Rai province launched a Lanna Wellness tourism campaign over the weekend, promoting local hot springs.
Speaking at the event, Pranpreeya Polyiam of the Provincial Tourism and Sports Office said tourists and local residents travel to the hot springs for relaxation, as well as health and wellness. She revealed that a research team from Chiang Rai Rajabhat University has performed a study, detailing health benefits of the 12 local hot springs.
To set Chiang Rai apart from other northern provinces, waters from the hot springs will be delivered to nearby hotels. Hot spring-based beauty and spa products and services will be developed and sold through the province’s hotels and spas to promote the popularity of local hot springs'.
Happier
Then from the officialdom to the slightly whacky.
The Bangkok Post (Nov. 14):
'Chinese tourists visiting Thailand in the thousands are making a lesser-known attraction far more popular – boiling eggs in a northern hot spring.
Scores more travellers from China were buying eggs from vendors at the steamy site in Chiang Rai’s Wieng Pa Pao district on Tuesday morning.
Chillier temperatures also encourage tourists to dip their feet in the warm water.
The egg suppliers of Tambon Mae Chedi Yai couldn’t be happier. Business has never been so brisk.
One vendor said she’s lately been selling 300 to 500 eggs a day to tourists, most of them Chinese.
The usual price is Bt20 for a woven basket holding three eggs.
Tourists suspend the baskets in the hot spring for a minute or two if they want their eggs soft-boiled and three minutes for hard-boiled'

Hot springs 💦🌀💙@dacentor#relax #peace #sankamphaeng #hotsprings#chiangmai #thailand
As the end of the year rolls by, a quickfire look at whether or not the list of most popular hot springs in the kingdom of Thailand has  changed much.
Yet again I tweaked the odd input here and there, however the outcome remains familiar.

1. (2016: 1) San Kamphaeng - Chiang Mai province
2. (6) Thapai - Mae Hong Son
3. (4) Hin Dad - Khanchanaburi
(5) Klong Thom - Krabi
5. (6) Sai Ngam - Mae Hong Son
6. (9) Wiangpapao (Thaweesin) - Chiang Rai
(-) Chaeson - Lampang
8. (2) Fang - Chiang Mai
9. (-) Nattawaree - Krabi
10. (10) Wareerak - Krabi
Just outside this Top 10 we can find Rock Valley (Khanchanaburi), Saline (Krabi), Chiang Dao (Chiang Mai), Raksawarin (Ranong) and Phu Klon (Mae Hong Son).
Soakingswise I'd prefer to rearrange this list, but such is what rolls out of the lists.

It's odd that through the years hardly any new names emerge despite competition catching up and methods of compilation evolving. For instance half of the above can be found in the original Top 10 8 years ago.

Points were awarded to relative standings on Instagram concerning tags (i.e. #fanghotspring(s)), Instagram location (using roman writing), instagram location (using Thai), Google search (of the last 12 months), Google search (based on % of the first 100 results), Google image search (based on % of the first 100 results), Twitter (number of hashtags/last 12 months), Flickr, Youtube finds (of the past 2 years), Tripadvisor (number of comments) and Facebook (likes).

Welcome to the jungle

Against expectations of little change, I've set out to compile the last 12 months most popular hot springs of Thailand.
Were there little changes? No doubt.

As always I tampered with the points system; after all the way we use internet changes constantly as well.
The major changes were adding Instagram counts for locations, while Tumblr was discarded.

The former proved to be difficult to achieve a significant difference between the most popular soaks. Problem is, Instagram has no count function for locations (as opposed to tags). Let's just say after counting 300 photo's each I gave the three most popular soaks the same number of points .... Mentionable is that this change allowed for more influence of Thai speaking posters, something which has been difficult to overcome in the past.
The latter was discarded as the Tumblr search function does not work as previously; there's precious little number of searches coming up with a result.

These changes resulted in more prominence for Instagram which attributed to f.i. the hot springs of Betong and Wiang Pa Pao moving up the charts.
I also afforded more prominence to Facebook which helped the no. 1 hot spring to stay where it was, but also boosted Rock Valley hot springs; Facebook in general seems to assist the business owned soaks.

So where does this leave us?
Points were awarded to relative standings on Instagram concerning tags (i.e. #fanghotsprings), Instagram location, Google search (of the last 12 months), Google search (based on % of the first 100 results), Twitter (number of hashtags/last 12 months), Flickr/Youtube finds, Tripadvisor (number of comments) and Facebook (likes).

I also looked at the locations themselves and concluded that we need to differ the votes for Pai, as they are now distinctly different; without splitting the votes between Sai Ngam and Pai, what was previously known as Pai would have been top of the batch. As such both are now ex-aequo no. 6. It also signifies how the rambling Sai Ngam soak is heading upwards ...:

Welcome to the jungle 🌴💦 #hotspring #pai #thailand #travel #gopro #goprohero4
Consummation
Out side the top 10, it's worth mentioning the significance of Krabi's Saline hot springs, definitely a contender for top 10 next year.
Biggest loser was Lampang's Chaeson hot spring which would dropped from ninth position last year to 17 this year.

The top 10 for 2016
1. (2015: 1) Sankampaeng (Chiang Mai; see also lead photo)
2. (4) Fang (Chiang Mai)
3. (6) Rock Valley (Kanchanaburi; photo below)
4. (3) Hin Dad (Kanchanaburi)
5. (5) Klong Thom (Krabi)
6. (-) Sai Ngam (Mae Hong Son)
    (2)Tha pai (Mae Hong Son)
8. (-) Betong (Yala)
9. (-)Wiang Pa Pao (Chiang Rai)
10. (7) Wareerak (Krabi)

โบกมือลาส่งยิ้มให้ สุขกับความอ้างว้างต่อไป.
What I do find surprising is that less and less of what's considered top soaking  sites of Siam are actually non-consumed: there's more thrill in the notion of naturally occurring hot spring waters than in actually taking the chance to bathe.
I illustrate this by using only Instagram tags: the top 3 above only have a total of 8 photo's of persons enjoying the waters by immersing themselves. This contrasts with Hin Dad (28 photo's) and Sai Ngam (35 photo's), where the only emphasis is on soaking ...
Possibly it's due to the privateness, but maybe soaking is not so popular with the mainstream ...

Just a short intermezzo blog update.

More from the north (than above).
Newly opened (source, Mar. 3): The Away Hot Springs Chiang Mai? The website mentions hot springs and it has a very large pool and jacuzzi, but is it for real (the natural hot water)?
It gets very good reviews on tripadvisor and booking.com.

Another new hot springs resort near Chiang Mai is the Sippa hot springs. It certainly has good photo's forthcoming on instagram (sample below). Sippa however has less reviews on tripadvisor (all good) while booking.com has fair reviews.

Nesting
Further south there's this news from The Nation (May. 18):
'People have been banned from entering the ‘Sa Nam Pud’ warm water stream area, where the Unseen Thailand attraction Emerald Pool in Krabi’s Khlong Thom district originates, until October.
The site has been closed for this period by the Khao Pra - Bang Kram Wildlife Sanctuary to conserve Taew Laew Tong Dam or Gurney's Pitta, one of the world's rarest birds.|As of 2010, there were 16 Gurney's Pitta in the forest.
Sanctuary head Wutthipong Chusangrat said the upstream part of Emerald Pool and trekking path must be closed as it was habitat of Gurney's Pitta, whose mating season and nesting falls during this period. In mid-April, only one female bird was spotted for the first time in five years. He said the closure wouldn't affect tourism, as the Emerald Pool would be open as usual. He urged tour companies to explain to clients as some tourists still tried to enter the area'.
Nearby are the Wareerak hot springs. Photo below with this cation from the ahpekbiker blog (May 7):
'That's us at the On-sen hot spring just outside Wareerak. There were several pools with varying temperatures from warm to extra hot, the extra hot one had temperatures reaching to above 40 degrees Celcius'.
Let's finish on top with yet another great picture from Pai ....

Let's start with this photographic tour of Thailand with some contributions from Central Thailand for a change.
If one heads out due west from Bangkok there's a lot to see and experience soakingswise. Probably the closest hot spring is the hot spring resort by the name of Rock Valley (below) just outside of Khanchanaburi town.
To the south of this in the delightful valley of Suan Phueng (Ratchaburi province) is the hot spring of Bo Klueng (above).
